Structure of a Rotary Switch

Inside, there are a set of stationary contacts, often made of conductive materials such as copper or silver alloys. These stationary contacts are arranged in a circular pattern. There is also a moving part, usually a wiper or a rotating contact arm, which is attached to the shaft or knob on the outside of the switch. When the knob is rotated, the wiper moves across the stationary contacts, making or breaking connections as it goes.

 


Working Principle


The working principle of a rotary switch is relatively straightforward. When the switch is in its initial position, the wiper is in contact with a specific set of stationary contacts, allowing electricity to flow through a particular circuit path. As the user rotates the knob, the wiper moves to different stationary contacts. For example, if there are three sets of stationary contacts labeled A, B, and C, and the wiper is initially on contact A, rotating the knob will move the wiper to contact B and then to contact C. Each time the wiper makes contact with a different set of stationary contacts, it changes the electrical connection, thereby routing the electrical current to different parts of the circuit.

 


Applications of Rotary Switches


Rotary switches find applications in a wide range of devices. In audio equipment, they are used to select different input sources such as a CD player, a radio tuner, or an auxiliary input. By rotating the switch, the user can easily switch between these sources. In some older-model televisions, rotary switches were used to change channels. Each position of the switch corresponded to a different channel frequency. In industrial control panels, rotary switches are used to control various functions such as starting and stopping motors, changing the speed settings of machinery, or selecting different operating modes. They are also commonly found in household appliances like multi-speed fans, where the switch is used to adjust the fan speed.
